After serving as goalkeeping coach for the Atlas Lions, he embarked on a coaching career. In this regard, he has managed several local clubs, including Moghreb Tétouan, Rapide Oued Zem, Chabab Atlas Khénifra, Renaissance Zemamra, and CR Al Hoceima.

On the eve of the high-profile clash between Brazil and Morocco, kicking off the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, “Foot Africa” caught up with Khalid Fouhami, who kindly answered questions from our editorial team.
Is Morocco a favorite or an underdog against Brazil?
Logically, Morocco is not the favorite. Looking at the history and achievements of both teams, Brazil is clearly ahead. Five-time world champions, boasting an exceptional pool of talent and regularly topping the FIFA rankings, Brazil remains a global benchmark.
That said, Morocco is no longer just an ordinary underdog. Their remarkable run at the 2022 World Cup, capped by a historic semifinal qualification, earned them the respect of football fans worldwide. Brazil remains the favorite, but Morocco now has strong arguments to challenge them.

Does Morocco have what it takes to beat Brazil as they did in the 2023 friendly?
Yes, Morocco has what it takes to beat Brazil. In football, no team is unbeatable. Everything will depend on the effectiveness of their game plan, capitalizing in both penalty areas, and the players' form on the day.
If the Moroccan side can seize their chances while neutralizing the opponent’s strengths, they could pull off an upset. However, this will require a heroic performance, especially in what could be challenging weather conditions.
What tactical plan should the Moroccan coach adopt against the Seleção?
Brazil often employs high and aggressive pressing. However, Morocco has players capable of playing out from the back under pressure. Still, vigilance will be essential as the Brazilians excel in fast transitions.
The Moroccan team should alternate between high pressing phases and sitting in a mid-block. This approach would disrupt Brazil’s build-up while taking advantage of the spaces left behind the Auriverde defense.
Wide players will need to exploit the space behind the Brazilian fullbacks. On the flip side, ball losses must be tightly controlled, as Brazil has extremely fast players like Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, and Endrick.
Who could replace Abdessamad Ezzalzouli on the left flank?
Replacing the Real Betis player would be particularly tough. He’s shown his quality both for club and country and has become a key figure in Mohamed Ouahbi’s plans.
There are several options, including Talbi or Amine Sebaï, who was recently brought into the squad. Sofiane Rahimi is another possibility, even if his recent performances have been disappointing.
For now, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli is difficult to replace, as his profile is truly unique within the squad.

Is Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil the favorite to win the 2026 World Cup?
Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most decorated managers in history. His greatest strength lies in his adaptability. Unlike some coaches who rigidly stick to a single philosophy, he knows how to get the best out of his squad based on their characteristics.
If Brazil navigates the group stage comfortably, they could gain momentum as the tournament progresses. With the individual quality of the Seleção and Ancelotti’s experience, this team is naturally among the frontrunners for the world title.
Could the Hakimi–Vinícius duel be the key to the match?
It will certainly be one of the keys to the match. Vinícius is especially dangerous when given space to accelerate on the break. On the other side, Achraf Hakimi is among the best attacking fullbacks in world football.
The challenge for Morocco will be finding the right balance. They can’t limit Hakimi’s forward runs, which are a major weapon, but must also maintain enough defensive cover to fend off Brazil’s counterattacks.
If the collective organization holds, Hakimi can make the difference going forward while also shutting down Vinícius-led counters.

Is Morocco currently the best African team?
According to the FIFA rankings, Morocco is currently Africa’s top nation. However, that doesn’t mean they dominate the continent unchallenged. Other teams are also highly competitive.
Senegal remains a benchmark thanks to their squad quality and their experience in major tournaments. Ivory Coast, the 2023 African champions, also boast a solid and ambitious group. Algeria, for its part, has plenty of talented players capable of competing with the best.
Besides Morocco, which African teams have what it takes to reach the semifinals?
Among the African teams most likely to make a deep run, Algeria stands out. They have a quality squad and several players who can make a difference at the highest level.
Senegal is also a serious contender. With experienced leaders and players competing in Europe’s top leagues, the Lions have what it takes to go far. Ivory Coast also deserves mention.
Senegal or Morocco: which team will go further?
It’s very difficult to answer that question. Both teams have what it takes to go deep into the tournament. The key will be to start strong, build confidence, and grow into the competition.

Which African player will be the standout star of the 2026 World Cup?
Several African players could stand out at the 2026 World Cup.
Achraf Hakimi is naturally among the most anticipated. Regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world, he has the experience and qualities to shine on the international stage.
Brahim Díaz will also be closely watched after a stellar season at the top level. For Senegal, Sadio Mané remains capable of turning a match thanks to his experience and leadership.
Algeria can count on talented players like Riyad Mahrez or Mohamed Amine Amoura, while Ivory Coast has particularly explosive attacking options who could make a name for themselves during the tournament.
