A true connoisseur of African football, French coach Denis Lavagne has plied his trade all over the continent, notably enjoying a successful stint with the Cameroon national team.

He also had a highly fruitful spell with Coton Sport de Garoua, claiming four domestic league titles and guiding the club to the final of the CAF Champions League in 2009.

Moreover, he has managed several major clubs in Africa, including Etoile du Sahel, Al-Hilal Omdurman, CS Constantine, JS Kabylie, and USM Alger.

In an interview with “Foot Africa,” Denis Lavagne kindly answered questions from the editorial team regarding the 2026 World Cup.

What is your take on the new 48-team World Cup format?

I would say this format has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, it allows more nations to participate, including teams that previously had little chance of qualifying for the competition. We are seeing the emergence of new countries on the world stage.

On the flip side, this could lead to a certain dilution in the overall level, with some matches potentially lacking intensity.

Which teams do you see as the best equipped to win the tournament?

In my opinion, France, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina are the main favorites for the trophy. England and Germany should also be mentioned. Historically, eight nations have won the World Cup, and I think we’ll see one of them on the podium again.

Which team could be the surprise package of the 2026 edition?

Two teams could spring a surprise: Canada and, why not, Cape Verde. These are sides that few expect to reach this level, but they could have an impressive run.

Cape Verde

Does France have the most complete squad in the tournament?

Yes, France seems to me the most complete team. Every position is covered, and the attacking lineup is particularly impressive with players like Mbappé, Dembélé, Doué, Barcola, and Cherki.

That said, talent does not always guarantee success. Back in 2002, France had an exceptional attack but failed to score in the group stage. Nothing is guaranteed in football. Nevertheless, France boasts a very deep squad in all areas.

Can England finally win a world title?

England are among the favorites. They have reached the latter stages of major tournaments in recent years, whether at the Euros or the World Cup. They have a quality squad, though perhaps still lack experience in decisive moments. I rank them just below France and Spain.

Can Portugal aim for glory with its new generation?

Portugal have a very strong team, especially in midfield and several other areas. Much will depend, however, on how the Cristiano Ronaldo situation is managed. He is an exceptional player, but his age raises questions about his ability to play the entire tournament.

Managing his playing time will be crucial: will he accept a less central role? Could this create tension within the squad? Despite this, I think Portugal is just a notch below France, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina.

Can Spain return to the top?

Yes, Spain is clearly one of the favorites, along with France. These two teams probably have the most complete squads in the tournament. They will be among the main contenders for the title, though the draw and the path to the final will play an important role.

Spain

Which is the best South American team right now?

Right now, Argentina seems to be the strongest team in South America. Brazil remains a football powerhouse, always capable of producing top talent, but is going through a less stable period in terms of results.

Which African side could reach the quarter-finals?

Several African teams can aim for a quarter-final spot. The most consistent remain Senegal and Morocco, who are currently the continent's top two sides.

Other teams like Ivory Coast or Algeria also have interesting qualities. And there could be surprises, such as Cape Verde. While not all will reach that stage, several African nations could make their mark at this World Cup.

Which African player could be the tournament's breakout star?

I’m thinking particularly of the young Senegalese talent Ibrahim Mbaye. The Paris Saint-Germain prodigy could be one of the tournament’s standout attractions. Despite his youth, he is already used to playing at the highest level both for club and country…

Ibrahim Mbaye

Can Morocco repeat its 2022 heroics?

Morocco has what it takes to go far in the competition. Reaching the semi-finals again, as in 2022, will be tough, but not impossible. They are a solid and respected side.

That said, I believe Senegal currently appears the best-equipped African team to go the furthest in the tournament.
