With just days to go before the 2026 World Cup kicks off, Algerian football fans remain split over who should dominate the right wing of the attack.

Some pundits believe Riyad Mahrez should remain the first-choice in this position, given his vast experience at the highest level.

Others argue that Anis Hadj Moussa is best equipped to start as the right winger thanks to his energy and outstanding technical skills, as demonstrated by his recent goal against the Netherlands.

To shed light on the Mahrez vs. Hadj Moussa debate, Foot Africa sought the opinion of Tunisian coach Chiheb Ellili, a renowned expert in Algerian football, who shared his thoughts on the matter.

Hadj Moussa is brilliant, but…

The former Tunisia U20 coach said he was impressed by Hadj Moussa's performance against the Oranje.

I liked what Anis Hadj Moussa showed during the match against the Netherlands. He has exceptional individual technique, real attacking power, and an impressive nose for goal.

However, he plays in a position with fierce competition, especially with Riyad Mahrez, who remains invaluable. In this kind of tournament, experience is a decisive factor, which is why his presence in the Fennecs’ starting eleven is crucial.

It’s true that he can no longer play matches back-to-back as he used to due to his advanced age, but his influence is still precious. His experience, reading of the game, and leadership can bring a lot to the Algerian team. I believe coach Vladimir Petkovic is experienced enough to manage his playing time wisely.
