The Fennecs' performance against the world champion Argentinians continues to spark strong reactions. Highly critical after the match, Djamel Benlamri singled out Vladimir Petkovic's tactical setup, certain defensive decisions, and the players' lack of commitment.

Following Algeria's heavy 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, criticism is mounting over Vladimir Petkovic's choices and the Fennecs' display. Former national team defender Djamel Benlamri did not hold back his anger after the final whistle.

Extremely critical of the coach's decisions, the former Greens player stated:

"I was first surprised by the lineup and by this four-man defense. Everyone expected the team to play in a 3-5-2, but Petkovic chose otherwise. He also stuck with the Mandi - Bensebaini pairing in central defense, a partnership that just doesn't work. It didn't work at AFCON, and he lined them up again at the World Cup. He has to take responsibility for that."

However, Benlamri didn't only target the technical staff. He was also highly critical of the players:

"I was also really disappointed with the players' attitude; they didn't bring the energy needed for such a match. I was actually angry. There's no shame in losing to Argentina, but you have to give it everything."
