FA Increases Liam Roberts’ Suspension After Brutal Challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta
The English Football Association has extended Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts' suspension to 6 match following his reckless challenge on Crystal Palace striker Jean Philippe Mateta.
Controversial Incident
Roberts rushed off his line in the 7th minute of the FA Cup clash last Saturday, colliding dangerously with mateta and kicking him in the head. Initially shown yellow card by referee Michael Oliver, Roberts was sent off after VAR review.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish described the foul as the worst challenge he'd ever witnessed.
FA’s Decision to Increase the Ban
Roberts was initially handed standard 3 match suspension but the FA appealed for longer ban, arguing that the punishment was "clearly insufficient." An independent regulatory panel upheld the FA’s request doubling the suspension to 6 game.
“The FA claimed that under these circumstances, the maximum punishment for the offense was clearly inadequate” the governing body stated. “Following hearing, the regulatory commission upheld the FA’s request and increased the suspension to 6 matches”
Mateta’s Recovery
Mateta who's been in outstanding form for Palace, received on field treatment for 10 minute before being taken to the hospital. The French forward suffered severe laceration and required 25 stitches to his left ear.
