In the second round of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, South African club Mamelodi Sundowns will host their Saudi counterparts, Al Ahli, on Saturday, 19 September.

The winner of this clash will lift the trophy of the FIFA Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup and, at the same time, secure their place in the Challenger Cup (a title contested between the winner of the CONMEBOL vs CONCACAF Americas Derby and the winner of the CAF vs AFC Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup).

Sundowns' mixed record against Asian sides

Before facing the Saudi football giants, the South Africans had met Asian clubs three times in official matches, recording two defeats and just one victory.

In 2016, Mamelodi Sundowns lost to Japan's Kashima Antlers (0-2) and South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (1-4), respectively, in the 2016 Club World Cup.

The reigning CAF Champions League winners recorded their first victory over an Asian club in 2025, at the Club World Cup.

Inspired by an Iqraam Rayners at the peak of his powers, the South African club edged South Korean side Ulsan HD 1-0.
