FIFA matchdays: African teams qualified for the World Cup reap a rich harvest

The African sides qualified for the 2026 World Cup largely shone during this first round of international friendlies. Out of the 9 teams, 5 secured impressive wins, 2 were held to draws, and 2 suffered defeats. This convincing showing already offers a glimpse into the level of preparation among the continent’s representatives, just three months ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Of the nine African qualifiers, five kicked off their campaigns with commanding and controlled victories. Algeria stood out with the biggest win of this international window, demolishing Guatemala 7-0. Vladimir Petković’s men displayed superb collective mastery, sending a clear warning ahead of a World Cup group that includes Argentina, Austria, and Jordan.

Egypt were equally impressive, dominating Saudi Arabia 4-0. The Pharaohs, set for a tough group alongside Belgium and Iran, gave plenty of reassurance about their attacking potential. Ivory Coast also impressed, dismantling South Korea 4-0. Driven by a promising new generation, the Elephants are clearly gaining momentum as they prepare to face Germany and Ecuador in the group stage.

Africa Cup of Nations champions Senegal imposed themselves with authority, beating Peru 2-0 at the Stade de France. The Lions of Teranga are proving they remain one of the continent’s top contenders ahead of a challenging group that features France and Norway. Finally, Tunisia got the job done against Haiti—a crucial victory for the Carthage Eagles as they prepare for a competitive group stage.

Mixed results for other contenders

Not all African teams enjoyed the same success. South Africa were held to a draw by Ecuador, a result that raises questions about their ability to compete in a tough group.

More concerning, Ghana suffered a heavy defeat against Austria (1-5). This loss highlighted significant weaknesses for the Black Stars, who will need a swift response ahead of the World Cup.

Cape Verde faced a similar fate, losing during this international break and needing to raise their game if they hope to stand a chance against heavyweights like Spain or Mexico.

An Africa largely on point

Despite a few setbacks, the overall picture remains positive for Africa’s representatives. Most teams showed solidity, efficiency, and—above all—a real sense of progress as the 2026 World Cup approaches.

Between confirmations and necessary adjustments, this FIFA break has served as a true barometer. The upcoming friendlies will be crucial for fine-tuning tactics and addressing any shortcomings.
