Injury shock: Will Mbappé miss the World Cup after Real Madrid injury blow?

Real Madrid confirmed on Monday 27 April that Kylian Mbappé has suffered a hamstring injury raising serious doubts over his availability for the remainder of the season and putting his World Cup participation into question.

The French forward picked up the injury during Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Friday 24 April in La Liga forcing concern inside the club just weeks before the start of FIFA World Cup 2026.

Real Madrid confirm diagnosis

In an official statement, Real Madrid said:

“Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid medical staff, he has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury in his left leg. His recovery will be assessed”

No official timeline has been provided but Spanish reports suggest the 27 year old could miss the rest of the domestic season.

Season run in now in doubt

Mbappé’s injury comes at a critical stage of the campaign. Real Madrid are scheduled to face Espanyol on Sunday 3 May before a decisive trip to Barcelona on 10 May.

However the club’s season has already slipped off track. Madrid sit 11 point behind Barcelona after 33 match and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the quarter final stage by Bayern Munich.

The absence of Mbappé would further weaken a side already struggling to keep pace domestically.

World Cup concern for France

The timing of the injury is particularly worrying for France. The FIFA World Cup 2026 hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico is set to begin on 11 June leaving a tight recovery window for the national team captain.

Mbappé remains central to France’s hopes of lifting the trophy and any prolonged absence would represent a major setback for one of the tournament favorites.
