World Cup 2026: Morocco shows ambition, confidence, and focus ahead of clash with Brazil

The moment of truth has arrived for Morocco. The Atlas Lions face Brazil on June 13 in their opening match of the World Cup. A five-star opponent, but one that does not intimidate the Moroccans, according to head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

The Moroccan coach declared: "We are not afraid of Brazil. We respect them, and I am sure they respect us as well. Our players are ready. We are Morocco."

The same spirit can be seen in captain Achraf Hakimi. With the calm of an African champion, his words weren't without a touch of humor: "They call us the African Brazilians." That phrase sums up the balance of power expected on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium in New York.

In a long tournament like the World Cup, there is no single favorite. We know Brazil's capabilities. It will be a very balanced match, and it could be decided by fine margins, especially in terms of attacking and defensive efficiency. We hope the edge will be ours and that we stay focused up front to score and defend well. I don't think there is a clear favorite in the World Cup.

Brazil vs. Morocco kicks off at 22:00 GMT, Saturday, June 13, at MetLife Stadium in New York.
