Arne Slot's decision to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench against PSG sent shockwaves through England. In a quarter-final of such magnitude, the absence of the Reds’ attacking talisman was seen as a true snub, fueling widespread confusion over what many saw as a humiliating treatment.

Questioned after the match, the Dutch manager tried to justify his choice:

“If we had been better, if we’d had more of the ball, then it would have made sense to bring Mohamed Salah on to make a difference. But if we have to defend as much as we did, then he should save his energy for the weekend.”

His explanation did little to convince the pundits.

On Canal+, Samir Nasri was openly critical:

“If you bring Mohamed Salah on with five minutes left, then you’re going to have a problem with Mohamed Salah.”

Steven Gerrard, meanwhile, praised Salah’s attitude:

“He’ll be frustrated... But he deserves praise because he stayed put and put in extra effort.”
