Mercato: Nobel Mendy set to join Hull City for 25 million euros

Nobel Mendy is on the verge of taking another major leap in his young career. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Senegalese centre-back is set to leave Rayo Vallecano for Hull City, after the two clubs reached an agreement for a deal that could rise to 25 million euros, including a 12.5% sell-on clause. The player's medical is scheduled ahead of signing a five-year contract.

Nobel Mendy truly made his mark during his stint at Rayo Vallecano, where he elevated his status. Arriving on loan from Real Betis in the summer of 2025, he gradually established himself in Madrid’s defensive rotation. The 2025-26 season allowed him to further showcase his abilities at the top level of Spanish football, making 28 appearances across all competitions, including 24 in LaLiga, for a total of 1,932 minutes. He also scored twice in the league.

One of his standout moments was his goal against Atlético de Madrid during Rayo’s 3-0 victory in February 2026. The Senegalese defender played a direct role in one of Madrid’s most significant wins of the season.

His progress convinced Rayo to exercise their purchase option last June. The club acquired 80% of his rights, while Betis retained a 20% stake in any future sale.

From Betis to a 25 million euro deal

The financial turnaround has been nothing short of remarkable. Rayo paid around 3.5 million euros to secure Mendy’s transfer from Betis. Just a few weeks later, the defender could net the Madrid club nearly seven times that amount.

Betis will also benefit from the deal thanks to their retained 20% sell-on clause. Based on a 25 million euro fee, that share would be worth about 5 million euros.

A new challenge in England

Trained in France and having played for Paris FC before joining Betis, Mendy initially had to wait for opportunities at the highest level. His Spanish journey saw him climb the ladder step by step: first with Betis’ teams, then in LaLiga with Rayo.

His move to Hull City now marks a new acceleration in his career. The Senegalese defender is set to experience English football, aiming to build on his Spanish progress and establish himself in a league famed for its intensity.

In just a year, Nobel Mendy has gone from a young defender searching for game time to a player valued at around 25 million euros. His rapid rise highlights the impact of his spell at Rayo Vallecano.
