Postecoglou Dismisses Key Stat as Salah Continues to Dominate
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou downplayed the significance of assists in football, statement that indirectly diminishes Mohamed Salah’s remarkable creative output for Liverpool this season.
Controversial Statement on Assists
Salah's registered 16 assist in 25 Premier League games this season leading the league in this category, Postecoglou, speaking after Tottenham’s 4 - 1 win over Ipswich Town, dismissed the value of the statistic.
“Assists are the most useless stat in football” he told Liverpool Echo. “Seriously you can get an assist off your backside and it just lands to someone on the halfway line”
Comparing Salah’s Impact
Despite the Spurs coach’s remarks, Liverpool Echo contrasted his statement with Salah’s influence. The Egyptian has provided assists in 14 different league games this season highlighting his importance as playmaker.
A prime example was his assist for Alexis Mac Allister in Liverpool’s 2 - 0 win over Newcastle United where Salah outmaneuvered 2 defender before delivering precise pass inside the box.
Salah’s Season in Numbers
Across all competitions, Salah's tallied 22 assist in 39 match, in addition to scoring 5 more goal than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. He also leads Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson by 7 assist.
Furthermore, since Postecoglou’s appointment in summer 2023 Salah's played 5 match against Spurs, contributing 4 goal and 4 assist.
