Transfer Market: Souleyman Doumbia Moves to MLS

Absent from the match sheet last weekend against Union Saint-Gilloise (3-0), Souleyman Doumbia was already in the United States to finalize his transfer. The Ivorian full-back joins Charlotte FC in Major League Soccer on a loan deal without a purchase option until the end of the season.

Having arrived on a free transfer at Standard Liège in January 2024, Doumbia has not managed to cement a long-term spot. At 28, he has been plagued by physical setbacks, particularly hamstring injuries, limiting his playing time to just 226 minutes in 11 appearances this season.

An Uncertain Future

Despite a promising stint last spring, which convinced the Liège management to activate his extension option until 2026, the Ivorian international has failed to deliver. This loan in Major League Soccer could offer him playing time and a fresh dynamic.

However, his future at Standard remains unclear. His lack of consistency and recurring injuries might prompt the club to part ways with him permanently after his American venture.
