Transfer: Swansea City sign Joseph Opoku

Swansea City have reached an agreement with Zulte Waregem for the transfer of Joseph Opoku. The young Ghanaian winger, just 20 years old, is set to undergo his medical in Austria before officially joining up with the Welsh club’s squad, currently at a pre-season training camp.

The Championship side fended off fierce competition to secure the player’s signature. Hull City, Genoa, Trabzonspor, Krasnodar, and Real Sociedad had all shown concrete interest in the Ghana international.

A breakout in Belgium

Arriving at Zulte Waregem in August 2024 from Ghanaian club Great Corinthians FC, Joseph Opoku quickly established himself as one of the brightest prospects in Belgian football. He first impressed the club’s management during a trial before signing his first professional contract.

After helping the club clinch the Challenger Pro League title in the 2024-2025 season and earning promotion to Belgium’s top flight, he extended his contract in July 2025. The 2025-2026 campaign saw him truly explode onto the scene at the highest level, racking up 10 goals and 16 assists in the league. His performances even earned him the Player of the Month award in April in the Jupiler Pro League.

A profile admired by Swansea

Swansea manager Vítor Matos is particularly fond of the Ghanaian’s profile, viewing him as a winger who can bring pace, directness, and creativity to his possession-based system.

A full international since this year, Opoku made his debut for the Black Stars against Mexico in May 2026. He was also named in Ghana’s preliminary squad for the 2026 World Cup, though he ultimately didn’t make the final roster.

With this signing, Swansea continue their squad overhaul, betting on a young attacking talent to aim for a stronger 2026-2027 campaign in the Championship.
