Trouble behind the scenes: World Cup 2026 hit by unfolding controversies
Concerns are mounting around FIFA World Cup 2026 after two separate controversies in Mexico & the United States raised questions about the tournament’s social and political impact.
From a deepening housing crisis in Mexico City to a branding dispute in New Jersey, preparations for the expanded 48 team competition are facing increasing scrutiny.
Mexico City: Rising rents & displacement fears
In Mexico City, the World Cup is beginning to reshape the housing landscape in ways that are alarming local residents. While the tournament is expected to boost tourism and economic activity, it is also accelerating a sharp rise in rental prices.
Reports indicate that rents increased by 12 to 15 percent during 2025, with more than 20000 families displaced annually as housing becomes unaffordable for many.
A government decree introduced in 2024 aimed to limit rent increases to inflation but landlords have reportedly bypassed the restrictions by terminating existing contracts and offering new ones at significantly higher prices.
Short term rental platforms are also playing a role. On average, three housing units are converted into tourist rentals each day reducing availability for long term residents and adding further pressure to the market.
The result is growing tension between the promise of a global sporting event and the reality faced by local communities struggling to remain in their homes.
United States: Branding dispute sparks political backlash
In the United States, a different kind of controversy has emerged around how the tournament is being marketed. Officials in New Jersey have criticized FIFA’s use of the slogan “World Cup in New York” arguing it overlooks the fact that key matches including the final, will take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The dispute has intensified due to the financial aspect. Local representatives claim that approximately $26 million in public funds is being used to support a campaign they describe as misleading and dismissive of New Jersey’s role.
Politicians have openly questioned why a state contributing significant infrastructure and investment is not being properly acknowledged in global promotion.
