Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya has reacted to his maiden senior national team call-up as he was named in the final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 22-year-old stalwart has only represented South Africa in the junior ranks despite his promising rise at Stellenbosch FC, which earned him a move to Philadelphia Union in July 2023.

Makhanya, however, was frequently named in the preliminary squads, including in the friendly matches against Panama in March, but never made the cut for the final team.

Now, he is set to be in the Bafana fold for the global showpiece, which he says is a dream come true, and gave credit to coach Bradley Carnell for trusting him at club level.

“Firstly, for me it's a dream come true and it's a really big honour for me and my family, to be part of the squad and be able to represent the national team,” said Makhanya.

"Coach Bradley is a really great coach, I've only been with him for a season and a half, and I've learnt so many things from him as a coach and as a person. He's a really great coach and a great human being.

"I really hope he understands how much I appreciate the opportunity that he has given me and my family, to showcase myself and believe in my journey.

On securing a starting berth at the heart of defence, Makhanya fancies his chances, revealing the events that led to him becoming comfortable on the ball with both feet.

“Personally, I believe I have all the qualities to play in that position. But I don't think I'm here to compete with anyone because I believe everyone in this team has the qualities to be here. It's all about when you're given an opportunity you just go in there and do the job,” he added.

"I'm naturally right-footed, but there was a point in my career when I was really young, I got injured on my right foot but I didn't want to stop playing, so I had to force myself to play with my left foot - that's how I ended up being able to use the other foot.

Bafana have been pitted in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, Czech Republic, and South Korea, with the tournament set to commence on 11 June.
