World Cup 2026: FIFA bans water bottles in stadiums
FIFA has urgently amended its regulations regarding stadium access for the 2026 World Cup. From now on, fans will no longer be allowed to enter with water bottles, including reusable types. This decision comes just weeks after a version of the code of conduct still permitted empty, clear plastic bottles.
According to communications sent to ticket holders, the ban is now absolute, with only one exception: baby bottles and sterilized water for infants, as well as liquids required for medical reasons, provided proper documentation is shown.
Safety and heat concerns
FIFA justifies this move mainly for security reasons, as bottles could be used as projectiles in the stands. However, the measure is raising particular concern given the extreme heat expected during the tournament in North America.
Several studies mention matches being played under high heat stress conditions, especially in uncovered stadiums. Critics are already voicing their concerns about the risks to spectator comfort and health.
While hydration systems are planned for players, this ban reignites the debate over water access for fans and the pricing practices inside stadiums. It's yet another controversy for an organization already under the microscope for its logistical decisions.
