Vladimir Petković Questions Officiating After Algeria’s Victory Over Botswana

Algeria reclaimed the top spot in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers tied with Mozambique on 12 point, after securing 3 - 1 away win over Botswana. However head coach Vladimir Petković expressed surprise over controversial refereeing decision that allowed Botswana’s goal.
Confusion Over Refereeing Decision
Speaking at the post match press conference, Petković didn't hold back in his criticism of the match official:
“Honestly I'm confused about what happened with Botswana’s goal, Initially the goal was ruled out for offside but then the referee changed his mind and awarded it”. he said.
The Swiss tactician questioned the logic behind the reversal, adding:
“As far as I know, VAR was not used in this match so overturning the decision is quite strange.”
Praise for Algerian Players
Despite the officiating concerns, Petković took the opportunity to applaud his squad for their resilience under difficult conditions.
“Full credit to all my players,” he said. “They showed great determination despite playing under intense heat while fasting.”
