World Cup 2026: Eric Chelle unveils his first squad with Nigeria
The new head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Eric Chelle, unveiled this Tuesday, March 4, his first expanded squad list since his appointment last January. This preliminary selection concerns the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, scheduled for March 21 and 25.
The return of Ahmed Musa
Among the 35 players called up, several veterans make their return, starting with Ahmed Musa. The former Nigerian captain, absent since AFCON 2024, rejoins the squad while now playing for Kano Pillars in Nigeria. Joe Aribo (Southampton) also makes his comeback.
Six new faces called up
It is noteworthy that the Malian coach is bringing in six new players, including three from the local league: Papa Mustapha (Niger Tornadoes), Kayode Bankole (Remo Stars FC), and Ifeanyi Emmanuel Onyebuchi (Enugu Rangers). Jerome Akor Adams (FC Sevilla), despite an injury, is also on the list, as are Maduka Okoye (Udinese) and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru (Lazio), both in recovery phases.
Furthermore, key players are present, notably William Troost-Ekong (Al-Kholood), Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), and Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United).
The final list of 23 players will be announced next week. Currently fifth in their group, Nigeria must capitalize on this break to reignite their campaign. >> A new player will join the Senegal Lions in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers
