Matchday 6 of the 2026 World Cup Africa Zone qualifiers delivered its verdict this Tuesday, March 25, 2025, with unexpected twists. After a brilliant start to the qualifiers, Sudan experienced an unexpected setback and saw its position deteriorate at the end of the day.

Before heading into matchday 6, Sudan proudly held the top spot in Group B. The Falcons of Jediane had accumulated 11 points after a series of four wins and one draw. This result put enormous pressure on the big teams highly anticipated in this group, such as DR Congo and Senegal.

However, during their 6th appearance in this tournament, the Falcons were held and slowed by their opponent. Sudan was held to a 1-1 draw at home by South Sudan. The match, played at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi, was marked by a Sudanese opening goal in the 76th minute, followed by South Sudan's equalizer in the 90th+8 minute.

Sudan loses top spot, DR Congo seizes the opportunity

This draw between Sudan and South Sudan allowed the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal to overtake Sudan in the standings. DR Congo defeated Mauritania 2-0, while Senegal overcame Togo 2-0. The Leopards lead Group B after this 6th matchday, followed by the Lions of Teranga in 2nd place. The group is now tighter than ever. Qualification will be determined by consistency and each team's ability to handle pressure in the remaining four matchdays.
