World Cup 2026 (Q): It's getting closer for Mohamed Salah and Egypt
Egypt continues its journey to the 2026 World Cup with a narrow victory over Sierra Leone (1-0). Although laborious, this victory allows the Pharaohs to widen the gap at the top of their group.
A sluggish match, but an essential victory
Facing a packed Sierra Leone defense, Hossam Hassan's men struggled to impose their rhythm. Mohamed Salah, expected to be the technical leader, remained discreet throughout the match. Yet Egypt managed to make the difference just before the break thanks to Zizo, well served by Trezeguet in the stoppage time of the first half.
After opening the score, the Pharaohs tried to increase their advantage right after the break. Marwan Attia hit the post, while Salah missed a great opportunity in the 54th minute. Despite these attempts, Egypt couldn't secure a second goal.
A strategic success in the race for the World Cup
While the overall performance wasn't dazzling, the essential is there: three more points and a five-point lead over Burkina Faso, second in the group. This success puts Egypt in an ideal position to secure a qualification for the 2026 World Cup. With four more matches to play, the Pharaohs must, however, step up their game to avoid any surprises and ensure a smooth qualification.
