World Cup 2026 (Q): Ivory Coast triumphs in Morocco!

Ivory Coast secured a narrow yet invaluable victory (0-1) against Burundi this Friday during the 5th matchday of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. It was at the Stade d'honneur de Meknès in Morocco that Evann Guessand lit up the encounter by scoring the only goal.

Guessand breaks the deadlock

Right from the kickoff, both teams engaged in a cautious opening round. Burundi created the first chance in the 12th minute, but the Ivorians quickly responded.

On a perfectly delivered cross from the right flank, Sébastien Haller, returning to the squad after over a month away, headed the ball. Guessand, opportunistic and precise, beat Jonathan Nahimana with an unstoppable cross-shot (0-1, 17th). Video:

An unyielding Ivorian defense to the end

Buoyed by this advantage, Ivory Coast attempted to extend their lead. Guéla Doué came close (19th) while a missed long-range effort dashed hopes of a break (34th).

Returning from the break, the Burundians increased the pressure, but the Ivorian defense remained unyielding.

Despite a last counterattack opportunity (90+3), the Swallows couldn't find the breakthrough.

Thanks to this victory, the reigning African champions reclaim the top spot in Group F, ahead of Gabon, who defeated Seychelles (3-0).

Next up: a clash against Gambia on Monday, where Franck Kessié and his teammates will aim to consolidate their leadership.
