French authorities recently questioned an African international star over corruption allegations just before the global tournament kicked off.

According to a shocking report from The Athletic, Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi was detained by French police shortly before World Cup 2026 commenced. The 23 year old is under investigation for suspected match-fixing.

Authorities are specifically looking into a yellow card he received during a French domestic clash between Nice and Metz on 17 May, suspecting it was a deliberate booking to manipulate betting markets.

The ongoing legal battle

The Marseille prosecutor's office confirmed an active investigation into organized fraud, sporting corruption and money laundering.

Wahi was released after his initial questioning and no formal charges have been filed yet. Despite the heavy legal cloud hanging over him, the attacker joined his national team for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico even starting in their crucial 1-0 opening victory over Ecuador.

Looming Canadian border issues

The Elephants are now preparing for a massive second group stage match against Germany in Toronto.

However, Wahi's legal situation could seriously complicate his entry into Canada, a nation known for strictly denying entry to individuals facing active criminal probes. The Athletic noted that FIFA has remained entirely silent on whether they knew about the police investigation before allowing the player to take the pitch.
