Ivory Coast boss Emerse Faé slammed Germany’s sportsmanship following a tense 2-1 World Cup clash on Saturday 20 Jun marred by late touchline drama.

The highly anticipated Group E showdown delivered on its promise of top-tier football but the aftermath was completely dominated by bitter accusations. Following a narrow defeat to Julian Nagelsmann's squad, head coach Emerse Faé did not hold back during his post match press conference.

He openly criticized the European giants stating he previously viewed them as a tactical model for his own team's development, only to be let down by their lack of class on the pitch.

The Wilfried Singo controversy

The core of the frustration stems from an incident in the 80th minute. Ivorian defender Wilfried Singo sustained a painful knock following a heavy challenge from Kai Havertz.

Attempting to stop the play to receive medical attention, Singo deliberately kicked the ball out of bounds. However his physical momentum caused him to fall back onto the pitch, forcing the referee to halt the game.

This interruption visibly enraged the German players who felt robbed of a quick attacking throw-in. When play finally resumed, the German side completely ignored the unwritten rules of fair play and refused to return possession to the Elephants, prioritizing their attack over player safety.

Touchline tension

The refusal to hand the ball back immediately ignited tempers on the touchline.

Faé revealed he became involved in a fierce verbal altercation with German full-back Nathaniel Brown. The Ivorian manager noted that while Brown is an exceptional talent, his attitude was entirely uncalled for during the heat of the match.

Faé simply advised the young defender to show some humility emphasizing that the pressure of chasing a victory in a tight 1-1 scenario did not justify disrespectful trash talk against an opponent.
