2024 Women's AFCON: Nigeria outclass Tunisia and claim three opening points

Nigeria and Tunisia kicked off Group B action at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The two sides faced off this afternoon at Stade Larbi Zaouli. The nine-time African champions immediately lived up to their reputation, sealing a convincing victory on day one.

A dream start to the match

Nigeria wasted no time taking control. In just the 4th minute, six-time African Women's Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring with a clinical header at the far post, meeting an Omorinsola Babajide free-kick cross. This electric start instantly put the Tunisians under pressure.

Babajide doubles the lead before halftime

Just before the break, Nigeria turned their dominance into a second goal. On a rapid counter, Omorinsola Babajide made it 2-0 with a precise left-footed strike tucked inside the post (45'+1). After a brief VAR review, the goal was confirmed, allowing the Super Falcons to head into halftime with a two-goal cushion.

Tunisia brave, but outmatched

Despite a few promising attacking moments, Tunisia lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. Salma Zemzem nearly pulled one back deep into stoppage time with a powerful strike that rattled the crossbar (90'+4), but it wasn't to be. The Tunisian defense, under constant pressure, finally cracked a third time. In the 84th minute, Chinwendu Ihezuo, who came on at halftime, sealed the victory with a low, driven finish after a fine assist from Esther Okoronkwo.
