2026 World Cup: Iranian players secure visas for the United States
The uncertainty surrounding Iran's participation has finally been lifted. According to a White House official cited by Reuters, the Iranian players have obtained their entry visas for the United States, where they will play their three group stage matches.
This decision comes after several tense days of diplomatic wrangling and concern within the Iranian football federation. Its president, Mehdi Taj, had indicated that the delegation's passports were handed over to the U.S. embassy in Ankara to complete all necessary administrative formalities.
Despite receiving their visas, the Iranian squad will not be based in the United States. Sports authorities have opted to set up their training camp in Tijuana, Mexico, from where the team will travel to the host cities on the day of each fixture. This unusual arrangement could complicate the players’ preparations, as they’ll be required to pass through U.S. immigration checks before every match.
Iran will face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in the group stage, with matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle during the 2026 World Cup.
