2026 World Cup: Rooney slams FIFA
The FIFA decision to allow Folarin Balogun to play in the round of 16 against Belgium continues to spark controversy.
Initially suspended after receiving a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the American striker was ultimately cleared to play, with his sanction suspended for twelve months. This decision triggered strong reactions, most notably from Wayne Rooney. The former England international did not hide his anger on BBC Sport:
It's an absolute disgrace. If I were the United States' opponent, I'd be absolutely furious. I think it's unfair on every level. Infantino should be ashamed of this because I believe the sporting spirit of football is at stake here.
According to him, FIFA should have either upheld the suspension or completely overturned the red card, but not chosen such a compromise. This controversy comes on the eve of a crucial World Cup clash between the United States and Belgium.
