Al Ahly boost as El Shenawy ban slashed ahead of title run-in

Egypt’s Football Association Appeals Committee ruled on Sunday, 19 April to reduce Mohamed El Shenawy’s suspension from four matches to two handing Al Ahly a timely boost in the Premier League title race after his red card against Ceramica Cleopatra.

The decision comes after the Al Ahly captain was sent off during the opening round of the championship group phase, in a match that quickly turned controversial.

Suspension cut, fine upheld

In official statement, the Egyptian Football Association confirmed that the Appeals Committee amended the original ruling issued by the competitions committee of the Egyptian Pro League.

El Shenawy will now serve a two match suspension instead of four while the financial penalty imposed on him remains unchanged.

The goalkeeper had initially been handed a four game ban for what was described as “pushing or pulling the referee” following his dismissal against Ceramica Cleopatra.

He was also fined EGP 2500 for receiving two yellow card in the same match.

The club currently sits third in the championship group with 40 points, trailing both Zamalek and Pyramids by three points.
