Algeria: FAF ultimately retains trust in Vladimir Petković

While his departure seemed almost certain after Algeria's elimination in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup against Switzerland, Vladimir Petković could ultimately continue his journey at the helm of the Fennecs.

According to information from Algerian Radio, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has reportedly decided to renew its confidence in the Swiss coach, putting an end—at least temporarily—to the many speculations surrounding his future.

Walid Sadi prioritizes stability

Contrary to the rumors circulating in recent days, FAF president Walid Sadi wants Vladimir Petković to see out his contract, which runs until 2028.

Recently, several media outlets had suggested an imminent split between the two parties. The Fennecs’ failure at the World Cup had weakened the manager’s position, while disagreements over the terms of a potential contract termination fueled ongoing discussions. The issue of a possible severance payout even hinted at a standoff between both sides.

FAF now appears to have chosen continuity, believing that replacing the head coach would not be the best solution at this stage.

An Algerian assistant to bolster the staff

This retention would not come without conditions, however. Still according to Algerian Radio, the Federation wants to add an Algerian assistant coach to the technical staff.

The position could go to Antar Yahia, the Fennecs’ iconic former captain. His arrival would strengthen the link between the coach and the domestic football scene, while also bringing greater knowledge of the national team’s environment.

Awaiting confirmation

If this decision is made official, it would mark a dramatic turn of events. Announced as being on the verge of leaving just days ago, Vladimir Petković could now continue his mission with the aim of reviving the Fennecs after their World Cup 2026 disappointment and preparing for upcoming continental and international challenges.
