According to statements reported by the Algerian media outlet Compétition, with the press conference not being broadcast, on the eve of the friendly match against Guatemala, Vladimir Petkovic revealed his intentions, decisively installing open competition within the Algeria squad. At the press conference, the head coach announced bold choices, notably regarding the goalkeeper position, as part of his evaluation plan ahead of upcoming fixtures.

A deliberate rotation in goal

The coach confirmed his intention to test several profiles:

"There is a strong possibility, but we’re still waiting for today’s training session. What’s planned, however, is that over the two matches, two different goalkeepers will play."

A pragmatic approach, in line with his modern vision of football:

"I leave goalkeeper management to the specialist coaches. That doesn’t mean I’m not involved in decisions or planning. In modern football, every area has its specialists."

Immediate demands for the newcomers

Petkovic left no room for doubt regarding the integration of new players:

"Integration must be immediate, both in attitude and quality. A player must show straight away that he belongs in the group."

He also praised Achraf Abada’s profile:

"He sent out good signals in the Arab Cup, he raised his level, and he has the qualities to be in this group. But it’s always the pitch that tells the truth."

Open competition and a squad under scrutiny

In the face of outside criticism, the coach prefers to stay focused:

"The decisions and statements of others are their responsibility. For me, the most important thing is the group’s positivity."

He also insists on the importance of thorough monitoring:

"We closely follow Algerian football. It’s not important to go to Dortmund or elsewhere; what matters is having the right information and seeing players’ performances."

With a wider squad and increased competition, Petkovic remains clear in his approach:

"We have a very large pool of candidates. Give me another two months to evaluate, and if everyone stays healthy, it’s the pitch that will decide."
