Barcelona face another hurdle before signing Nico Williams
Suddenly, after the deal seemed to be slipping away and Barcelona began to approach other names to bring him to the Camp Nou, today the deal is once again back in the headlines of the Barcelona transfer news this summer.
Barcelona started moving again to sign Basque Nico Williams to bring him to the Camp Nou for the next season and strengthen the offensive line with a skilled winger who has developed greatly in the past two seasons and has become one of the best young wingers in Europe, and his name has been linked with many major clubs in the world.
Paying for the contract is all that is required
If Barcelona are able to pay the player's €62m penalty clause, Nico will be at the Camp Nou from next season along with his teammate Lamine Yamal
The deal for the player will be a six-year contract, a deal that the press revealed that the club reached a personal agreement with the player and his entourage.
Juan Laporta has personally told the club's 1,000 most prominent members that they will definitely have to sign the Spanish striker in order to strengthen their forward line for next season.
"We’re on the verge of making an imminent signing. We’ll surely be able to sign another player who excites us a lot.”
La Liga has a different opinion
Javier Tebas, La Liga’s president, seems to relish his battles with figures like Laporta and Florentino Pérez in Madrid, often making their lives as difficult as possible.
Given this, it’s no surprise that Tebas holds a starkly different view ahead of Laporta’s optimistic public statements.
Barcelona currently doesn’t comply with La Liga’s 1:1 rule. They must take certain steps before registering players like Eric García—nothing drastic, but enough to keep them on their toes.
If Nico Williams is to have any chance of joining Barcelona and playing alongside his national teammates next season, Laporta and Deco will need to pull some strings.
Their desperation to sign a player who rejected them just a year ago—but now appears open to the move—might explain Deco’s failed attempts to push Marc-André ter Stegen out the door, with Ronald Araújo potentially following soon after.
Another complicated summer awaits. In previous years, players like Olmo and Kondé missed the start of the season due to registration issues. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
