Black Queens: Ghana to face Benin, Malawi and Nigeria ahead of 2024 Women's AFCON
The Black Queens of Ghana have kicked off their preparations for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations with a series of three friendly matches. After a 3-1 victory over Malawi on Saturday, June 21, they are set to take on Benin before a crucial clash against Nigeria.
Under the guidance of head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, the Ghanaian squad began their pre-AFCON training camp in Benslimane, Morocco, on June 17. Of the 24 players called up, 19 are already in camp, with the remaining five expected to join soon.
A triple test for the Black Queens ahead of AFCON
With just weeks to go before the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled from July 5 to 26 in Morocco, Ghana's national team is ramping up preparations for the tournament. In this context, the GFA has organized three friendlies against Malawi, Benin (who replace Botswana), and Nigeria on June 21, 25, and 29, respectively.
A successful first outing
On the evening of Saturday, June 21, the Ghanaians faced their counterparts from Malawi. The Scorchers struck first, with Saani Tendai opening the scoring in the 15th minute. Despite their strong start, Malawi could not hold on. Doris Boaduwaa leveled the score in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot and put the Black Queens ahead with her second in the 32nd minute. After the break, the ลฝFK Spartak Subotica striker sealed her hat-trick in the 83rd minute, securing Ghana's 3-1 victory.
