Brentford attracts a South African investor
Brentford could soon welcome a new shareholder from Africa. A South African businessman is in advanced talks to acquire a minority stake in the English club.
Current owner Matthew Benham has been looking for years to bring in partners to help Brentford grow, without giving up control. He is reportedly considering selling between 10 and 20% of his shares, valued at around £400 million.
Gary Lubner is not alone in the deal. According to The Athletic, he is joined by Matthew Vaughn, the renowned British director (Kingsman, X-Men: First Class). Their arrival is intended to inject fresh capital into the club’s transfer market ambitions and to strengthen the development of the Best Intentions multi-club group.
Since taking the helm at Brentford, Benham has propelled the club from League One to the Premier League, with a new stadium inaugurated in 2020. But to remain competitive, additional financial backing is becoming essential. This potential investment also marks a new chapter: Africa is making its presence felt in the business of English football.
