CAN 2025 / Algeria - Burkina Faso: history of encounters
The history between Algeria and Burkina Faso is one of the continent’s most captivating rivalries. Nineteen meetings, a perfectly balanced record: 6 wins for Algeria, 6 for Burkina Faso, and 7 draws. Neither nation has ever truly managed to dominate the other, and that’s exactly what gives their 20th clash, on December 28, 2025, such a unique sense of tension. In this AFCON, it’s no longer just about numbers—it’s about a ticket to the round of 16.
Memories remain etched in the collective memory. The 7–0 in Oran in 1981, a record victory for the Fennecs, has become legendary. But Burkina Faso has since erased that aura of invincibility, notably with the 3–2 win in 2013 during World Cup qualifiers, and the 2–2 draw in 2024 in Bouaké, where Algeria came dangerously close to elimination. Between these two sides, everything can change right up to the dying moments of a match.
Today, the stakes couldn’t be clearer: the winner will automatically qualify for the round of 16. As Vladimir Petkovic reminded everyone,
“I always say the next match is the toughest.”
And up against these unpredictable Stallions, no one dares to call a favorite.
