CAN 2025: Algeria confirm a withdrawal ahead of DR Congo clash
Algeria will have to continue their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign without Jaouen Hadjam. The Algerian left-back suffered an ankle injury during the group stage match against Burkina Faso on December 28, forcing him to make an early exit from the tournament. Despite a courageous attempt to play on after a harsh tackle, the 22-year-old eventually had to come off, casting doubt over his future in the competition.

After being attended to by the medical staff, Hadjam underwent thorough tests, including an MRI scan, which confirmed an injury incompatible with continuing in the AFCON. At a press conference, head coach Vladimir Petkovic left no room for doubt: “After several attempts to get Hadjam back, we have ultimately decided to release him so he can continue his treatment with his club.” A decision made out of caution, just days before a knockout showdown.
The defender has now been released to join BSC Young Boys in Bern, where he will begin his rehabilitation. His absence is a significant blow for the Fennecs on the eve of their round of 16 clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo, but the objective is clear: to ensure Hadjam returns fully fit for upcoming international fixtures.
