CAN 2025: Yan Diomandé sets a new record for precocity with Côte d’Ivoire

Yan Diomandé carved his name into Ivorian football history at the Africa Cup of Nations. The young RB Leipzig winger broke a precocity record during the victory over Burkina Faso.

Scorer of the crucial second goal against the Stallions (3-0) on Tuesday night in the CAN 2025 Round of 16, Yan Diomandé not only helped the Elephants secure a spot in the quarterfinals, but also wrote his name in the record books.

At just 19 years and 1 month old, the young winger became the youngest Ivorian to score at the AFCON since Tchiressoua Guel, who netted against Sierra Leone on March 27, 1994 (at 18 years and 3 months).

Even more impressively, he is now the youngest player ever to score for his national team in a knockout stage across all competitions.

His teammate, Bazoumana Touré (19 years, 10 months), also found the back of the net, making it the first time in history that a team has fielded two scorers under 20 in a single AFCON match.

Both rising stars will look to make their mark again in a mouthwatering quarterfinal clash between Côte d'Ivoire and Egypt, set for next Saturday at 7 pm GMT.
