Chiefs close to signing R5m-rated defender
South African club Kaizer Chiefs want to sign a defender worth R5m, but there is only one obstacle in the process of finalizing the deal, according to reports.
These reports say that the player Amakhosi wants to sign is 21 years old and possesses very high technical qualities that distinguish him from the rest of his generation, so he would be a good fit for the team for the next stage, but his team is asking Kaizer Chiefs R5 million to release him completely.
Amakhosi's defense line has been transformed
Kaizer Chiefs look set to make a major coup in the current transfer window by signing 21-year-old Ime Okon, but the player's club, SuperSport United look set to put some financial hurdles in the way of the deal.
Although Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are competing for his services, Makhosi is the frontrunner in the race to secure the services of the young player who will be a cornerstone of the upcoming season according to Makhosi's management.
SuperSport United may have let Ime Okon's contract expire on June 30, but the club still holds the right to demand compensation for his development—a key obstacle now delaying his potential move to Kaizer Chiefs.
Reports suggest that while personal terms between Okon and Amakhosi have been settled, negotiations have hit a snag over the required payment to his former club. A source close to the matter clarified, "Chiefs need to pay SuperSport a development compensation fee, estimated at around R5 million. This isn’t a transfer fee—it’s reimbursement for nurturing him as a youth player, ensuring his original club benefits from his progression."
Given Okon’s background as a product of SuperSport’s academy, the claim aligns with standard football regulations protecting clubs that invest in young talent. The issue now rests on whether Chiefs will meet the demanded amount to finalize the deal.
