Club World Cup: Al Ahly coach reacts after defeat to Palmeiras

Defeated 2-0 by Palmeiras in their second outing at the 2025 Club World Cup, Al Ahly's players suffered their first loss under José Riveiro. Here’s what the Spanish coach had to say.

It’s a frustrating defeat, but not yet a knockout blow, according to José Riveiro speaking to DAZN:

The first half was balanced. But after the break, we made two mistakes in quick succession: we mishandled a free kick, then failed to stop a transition. After that, even though we tried to react, we never really regained control of the match.

An own goal by Wessam Abou Ali and a finish from Jose Manuel Lopez were enough to seal victory for the Brazilians. Nevertheless, Riveiro is not giving up:

As long as the numbers don't rule us out, we believe. Our duty is to beat Porto and keep the journey going.

Heading into the final matchday, Palmeiras and Inter Miami each have 4 points. Al Ahly and Porto have just one. A win against the Portuguese side could be enough to reach the round of 16.
