Club World Cup: An African player in the team of the week for matchday one

FIFA has unveiled the team of the week for the opening matchday of the 2025 Club World Cup, and among the selected stars is an African representative.

It’s Divine Lunga from Mamelodi Sundowns. Deployed at left-back during his side’s historic win over Ulsan HD (1-0), the Zimbabwean defender was a true wall on his flank. His rock-solid defensive display, highlighted by several crucial interventions, helped the South African champions clinch their first-ever victory in the tournament.

Interestingly, despite his performance at left-back, Divine Lunga was listed as a right-back in DAZN’s official team of the week. He lines up alongside renowned defenders such as Sergio Ramos, who scored for Monterrey against Inter Milan.

This accolade highlights the impact of both Sundowns and Lunga on matchday one, especially as few African teams have shone so far. The South African club now looks to build on this momentum in their next clash against Dortmund.
