Defying the over 30 rule: Inside Real Madrid’s plan to extend Thibaut Courtois

Real Madrid are on the verge of agreeing a one year contract extension with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until the summer of 2028 according to Spanish sports daily AS.

Breaking the over 30 policy

Courtois whose existing contract runs until June 2027, is poised to receive an exceptional contractual commitment from the club hierarchy.

In recent seasons, Real Madrid’s standard policy for players over the age of 30 has been to delay negotiations until the end of the campaign to evaluate their physical and technical conditions. Even club legends such as Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić were subject to this strict year by year evaluation.

However, the club has decided to waive that waiting period for the 34 year old Belgian international.

Real Madrid's leadership conducted a market assessment and determined that there are currently no viable alternatives capable of matching Courtois' influence between the posts, making his continuity an immediate priority rather than a deferred decision.

Decisive form and Mourinho's absolute trust

The board's determination to finalize terms early follows Courtois' sustained elite performances.

The goalkeeper recently delivered a standout display in Madrid's 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League, making seven vital saves to preserve the three points against the Italian side.

Within the club, officials believe Courtois has fully earned the extension on sporting merit, having demonstrated that his physical sharpness remains intact. First-team manager José Mourinho has repeatedly voiced complete confidence in the shot-stopper, an assurance strongly shared by the Madrid fanbase.

Succession planning and goalkeeping stability

While Real Madrid hold high hopes for the development of Javi Navarro, the talented goalkeeper currently playing for the club's U19 team, the hierarchy acknowledges that relying on him in the immediate future would be premature. Extending Courtois through to 2028 secures stability in one of the team's most critical positions, shielding the defense while allowing emerging prospects like Navarro the necessary time to mature without unwarranted pressure.
