Liverpool’s perfect start ended inside a raucous Chobani Stadium. The Reds led twice in Istanbul, but Fenerbahçe produced a stunning late turnaround to claim a memorable victory.

Three matches and three wins: Liverpool’s perfect Champions League run came to an end in Istanbul. Despite controlling long spells and taking the lead twice, the English side were beaten 3-2 by a clinical Fenerbahçe on Wednesday, November 4.

Nyoni strikes before Greenwood’s quick response

Liverpool made their positive start count through Trey Nyoni. The young midfielder met a poorly cleared ball on the edge of the area and beat Ederson in the 25th minute (0-1). The hosts responded only four minutes later, when Mason Greenwood’s free-kick deflected off Jérémy Jacquet and wrong-footed Alisson (1-1, 29’).

Fenerbahçe had already hit the crossbar through İrfan Can Kahveci shortly before the equaliser. Greenwood then forced another save from Alisson before the interval, which arrived with the teams level despite Liverpool’s territorial control.

Archie Brown and Muriqi complete the comeback

Liverpool regained the advantage after the hour mark. Substitute Alexander Isak headed in with his first touch from Cody Gakpo’s cross (1-2, 69’), but the lead lasted only four minutes. Following a quickly taken corner, a deflected N’Golo Kanté delivery reached Archie Brown, who finished at the far post (2-2, 73’).

Fenerbahçe completed their turnaround in the 79th minute. Brown became the provider, delivering a cross that substitute Vedat Muriqi met with a perfectly placed header beyond Alisson (3-2). Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser but could not avoid their first defeat of the campaign.

Having already conceded three goals against both LASK and Villarreal despite winning those games, the Reds again showed their defensive vulnerability. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, earned their first victory after two draws and one defeat. Liverpool sit fifth provisionally with nine points, while the Turkish club climb to 19th on five.
