FIFA rankings: Argentina retakes top spot ahead of World Cup final
Thanks to their victory over England on Tuesday night in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, Argentina has reclaimed the top spot in the FIFA World Rankings. Led by Lionel Messi, La Albiceleste now sits ahead of Spain, their opponent in the World Cup final.

In the latest FIFA ranking update, Argentina returns to first place with 1,970.37 points, ahead of Spain, who drop to second with 1,965.61 points.
Lionel Scaloni's men booked their ticket to the final after a dramatic comeback against England.
Trailing after Anthony Gordon opened the scoring in the 55th minute, the Argentinians turned the match around late thanks to goals from Enzo Fernández (85th) and Lautaro Martínez in stoppage time (90+2).
France rounds out the podium with 1,948.97 points, while England holds on to fourth place despite their elimination in the semi-finals.
