Fousseyni Diawara takes the reins of Mali U23 (Official)
Former Malian international Fousseyni Diawara is making a grand return to the national team setup. Retired since 2015 after an illustrious career spanning over 15 years at the top level, the ex-fullback of the Eagles of Mali (55 caps) has been appointed head coach of the U23 team, as announced by the Malian Football Federation (Femafoot) via a statement on Facebook.
At 44 years old, Diawara, who played for AS Saint-Étienne and became a consultant for Canal+, is back on the bench of the Eagles Espoirs with the goal of guiding the new generation.
During his playing career, the former right-back notably played in three Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals (2002, 2004, 2013), securing a bronze medal in 2013.
Fousseyni Diawara will be supported by Samba Sow
In this new adventure, the Paris native will rely on his former teammate Samba Sow, who joins the senior team as General Manager.
With 36 caps and two goals between 2012 and 2014, the former midfielder also participated in the 2013 AFCON.
This experienced duo embodies the renewal of the Malian technical staff, with the mission to make the Eagles shine on the continental stage.
