From Mentor to Superstar: Okocha Reflects on Guiding Ronaldinho at PSG
Former Nigeria captain Jay-Jay Okocha's revealed how he played guiding role in the early european career of Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho during their time together at Paris Saint Germain.
In recent interview with Oma Sports, Okocha spoke about his relationship with the then 20 year old Ronaldinho who joined PSG from Gremio in 2001, three years after Okocha'd arrived in Paris from Fenerbahce.
“I was already household name at PSG when he came. PSG was his first team in Europe or outside Brazil and he was just 20 years old” said Okocha.
Recognized as two of the most entertaining dribblers in football history, Okocha & Ronaldinho shared the same dressing room for 2 seasons. During that time, the Nigerian star became mentor figure to the young Brazilian, helping him adapt to new culture and environment.
“It takes while to settle in and learn about new cultures. I acted a bit like a senior brother talking to him, encouraging him because his talent was obvious to everyone. But sometimes you just need time to adjust and I’m glad he appreciated that”
While both dazzled fans with their flair and creativity, Ronaldinho would go on to achieve global stardom winning the World Cup, Copa America, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d’Or. Okocha though never lifting such silverware, remains one of the most admired African players for his unforgettable skill and influence.
