Geny Catamo continues his strong start to the season with Mozambique after Sporting form
Geny Catamo is continuing his strong start to the season. The Sporting winger made the difference for Mozambique by helping the Mambas hold Senegal to a 1-1 draw on Friday, during the opening round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying in Group J.
Catamo answers Senegal. Trailing after Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring, Mozambique reacted quickly. Geny Catamo equalised late in the first half to bring the two teams level before the break.
His goal allowed the Mambas to fight back in a match largely dominated by Senegal in terms of possession and chances. The Lions of Teranga continued to push after the break, but the Mozambican national team held firm until the final whistle to preserve a share of the points. The goal came in a particular context: against one of the most experienced teams in the group, his strike directly contributed to Mozambique’s result.
The goal also adds to Catamo’s personal statistics with the Mambas. The Sporting winger now has 15 goals in 44 appearances for Mozambique, confirming his status as the national team’s top scorer.
A run already visible at Sporting
This attacking efficiency has also been evident in his start to the season with Sporting CP. Catamo has played 7 matches in all competitions, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists. In the league, he has one goal and three assists in six appearances.
This attacking influence has also accompanied Catamo’s start to the season with Sporting CP. The Mozambican first caught the eye against Vitória Guimarães by providing an assist in the Lisbon club’s 3-2 victory. He then delivered another assist against Alverca in a 3-1 win, before contributing to the draw against Estrela da Amadora (2-2).
Catamo then added his name to the scoresheet against Rio Ave. Starting in Sporting’s 4-0 victory, he scored his team’s second goal. A few days later, he also scored against Galatasaray in the Champions League, during the Portuguese club’s 3-1 victory.
With Mozambique, Catamo has therefore added another decisive contribution to this run. His goal against Senegal above all allowed the Mambas to return with a point ahead of the remainder of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
