Here's why the white foam spray has almost disappeared from the pitch

Once iconic for free kicks, the white foam spray used by referees has gradually vanished from some competitions. Here are the main reasons why.

Widely introduced during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, this spray allowed referees to mark the position of the ball and the defensive wall. Highly appreciated by fans, it effectively curbed cheating, especially players moving forward before the kick.

A legal dispute at the root of its withdrawal

The main issue isn't its effectiveness, but rather a legal battle. Brazilian inventor Heine Allemagne claims that FIFA used his invention without properly compensating him.

A Brazilian court sided with the inventor in certain proceedings, ordering FIFA to stop using the spray in some competitions. Football's world governing body is contesting this decision and continues to defend itself in court.

Contrary to what one might think, the spray hasn't completely disappeared. It's still used in several leagues and competitions, but its usage has become more sporadic due to this legal uncertainty.
