Sekhukhune United winger Keletso Makgalwa has opened up on his struggles and exit at reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Downs academy graduate was promoted to the first team during the 2017/18 campaign under then-head coach Pitso Mosimane, but failed to command a regular place in the starting XI.

As a result, Makgalwa was subject to a series of loan spells to Maritzburg United (now Durban City), Moroka Swallows, TS Galaxy, and All Stars in the second-tier, respectively.

The 28-year-old playmaker attributed his unsuccessful spell at Sundowns to persistent injuries, which kept him on the sidelines for prolonged periods.

“I think it was a great journey and you know sometimes there are some injuries in football, so that's where I struggled when I was at Sundowns, especially after winning the treble with coach Pitso before he left,” said Makgalwa.

"There were too many setbacks after that [injuries] so that's why I even went out on loan to seek some game time somewhere. I think I had a great journey to be honest, just the injuries held me back.

Makgalwa went on to reveal that he terminated his contract at Chloorkop in a bid to stage a redemption arc and realize his dream of wearing the green and gold jersey of the national team.

“Injuries played a big role on me and yes I went to Upington City. I terminated my contract with Sundowns because I needed to start afresh, of which I did, and I told myself that one day I want to see myself in the Bafana Bafana team,” he added.

"So, I had to work hard to make sure that I come back very strong.

The Babina Noko talisman is part of Hugo Broos' squad that will face Zambia in the international friendly match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 15 November.
