Manchester United: Amorim responds to criticism
Under fire for several weeks, Ruben Amorim is striving to stay the course at Manchester United. Having arrived eleven months ago to rejuvenate the Red Devils, the Portuguese manager has seen his tactical approach regularly questioned by former club players and influential pundits. But facing the media on Friday, ahead of the trip to Sunderland, Amorim chose to respond with composure. “It’s normal, we can’t turn a blind eye. Last season doesn’t matter to me. This year, we’ve played six matches and lost three, but the system isn’t the issue,” he explained. The coach was keen to emphasize that his team’s problems are more about consistency and execution than tactical setup.
Asked about his players’ commitment to his principles, Amorim admitted there’s still work to be done: “You can’t say something doesn’t work when it works one weekend and not the next. You have to do it the same way every day.” Clear-eyed about the doubts surrounding him, the Portuguese manager prefers to answer on the pitch: “This isn’t the time to talk, it’s time to show.” A statement that sounds like a warning on the eve of a crucial clash against Sunderland.
