Niger clinches qualification by defeating Benin 1-0 in U20 WAFU B
Niger is through to the semi-finals and takes another step towards the 2027 U20 AFCON. On Wednesday afternoon in Yamoussoukro, the U20 Mena edged out Benin 1-0 in a decisive Group A clash at the WAFU B U20 Boys Championship.
A tight contest dominated by Benin
Under pressure, both teams needed a win. It was the Young Cheetahs who seized the initiative. Showing more attacking intent, they launched wave after wave of attacks, putting Niger's defense under serious strain for long stretches. But despite creating good chances, Benin lacked a clinical edge. In response, Niger opted for solidity. Well organized at the back, the Mena repelled every threat and waited for their moment.
Ismaël Abdul Aziz delivers the knockout blow
Just as a draw seemed inevitable, the Mena’s vice-captain made the difference. Late in the second half, Ismaël Abdul Aziz beat the goalkeeper with a precise strike. 1-0. The goal sent the Nigerien bench into wild celebration. Rightly named man of the match, Ismaël secures qualification for his country.
Next up is a showdown against Côte d’Ivoire to wrap up Group A. Niger is now closing in on qualification for the 2027 U20 AFCON set to be hosted in Ghana.
Benin, meanwhile, exit the competition after their 5-0 defeat against the hosts.
