Real Madrid: here’s how much José Mourinho’s arrival will cost
The return of José Mourinho to Real Madrid could represent a significant investment for the Madrid club. In a statement released this Thursday, Benfica confirmed that a compensation fee of 15 million euros will need to be paid to release the Portuguese coach from his contract if Florentino Pérez is re-elected as Real Madrid president.
José Mourinho will cost Real Madrid 15 million euros. This amount will be paid to Benfica as compensation, according to the statement from the Portuguese club. This announcement comes just a day after Florentino Pérez declared that the Portuguese tactician would be his choice to take over the first team should he win the presidential election scheduled for June 7.
Benfica confirms the terms of Mourinho’s departure
In its statement, the Lisbon club detailed the terms for a possible move by Mourinho to the Spanish capital. Benfica specified that the coach’s contract contains a release clause set at 15 million euros.
“Sport Lisboa e Benfica informs that the candidacy of president Florentino Pérez for the Real Madrid CF elections has expressed his firm intention to appoint coach José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix if he wins the elections for the presidency of the Madrid club. In this case, the transfer will be completed upon payment of 15,000,000 euros, corresponding to the termination clause of the current contract,” the statement reads.
A highly anticipated return to Madrid
If the deal goes through, José Mourinho would make a dramatic return to the Real Madrid dugout, which he previously managed from 2010 to 2013. During his first spell, the Portuguese manager won, among other trophies, a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup.
His potential appointment would mark a major turning point for Los Blancos, as Florentino Pérez seeks to win over the club’s socios for another term at the helm of the institution.
Mourinho’s future now hinges on the outcome of Real Madrid’s presidential election. Should Florentino Pérez be re-elected on Sunday, the Spanish club will have to shell out 15 million euros to secure the services of the “Special One,” orchestrating one of the most headline-grabbing comebacks in European football.
